Gathering together, sharing support, and giving back – these are the building blocks that make communities such a valuable foundation of our lives and well-being. Unfortunately, the pandemic kept many of us isolated without social support for years, contributing to mental health concerns that aren’t easy to navigate alone.

In the wake of the pandemic, fostering our communities and mental health has become more important than ever. Our ResWell team would like to share three simple ways you can contribute to your local community and share in its restorative benefits:

1. Connect With Your Friends, Neighbors, and Community

Take time to forge connections with those around you and rekindle relationships with friends or family members you haven’t seen in a while. For example, you could take an evening walk with a neighbor or host a game night with friends.

You could even perform a random act of kindness for a stranger, such as buying a drink for the customer behind you at your local coffee shop. Fostering these connections helps create a valuable support system, both for yourself and those you care about.

2. Visit and Support Local Organizations and Events

Search for ways to become part of something bigger. Help organize a block party, bring your family and friends to local events, volunteer at a non-profit group, or support your local NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) chapter — there are countless ways to give back and support your community.

Dr. Navarro loves to visit the local farmer’s market on weekends with his family, as it reminds him of the therapeutic power his community can have.

3. Guide Others to Seek Out Support

No matter how powerful a person’s support system may be, some issues — especially mental health concerns — require the experienced guidance of a professional. As part of your community, you can help refer others to mental health resources and integrative treatment centers such as ResWell
