Neurofeedback Therapy for ADHD in Children

Neurofeedback is an evidence-based, non-invasive treatment that looks at your neural anatomy and the wiring of your brain. It allows us to analyze the system responsible for your mental health concerns and use this information to help you address thoughts, triggers, and patterns that impact your mental well-being.

How Neurofeedback Treatment Works at ResWell

The 4 steps of getting neurofeedback therapy from ResWell are as follows:

1. Schedule an appointment

Call or message us to let us know what concerns you or your child may be struggling with. We will work with you to schedule a consultation as soon as an opening is available. Fill out our new patient inquiry form here.

2. Attend your consultation

During your initial consultation, your ResWell provider will evaluate you or your child and record a quantitative EEG, the electrical fingerprint of your brain. This qEEG will show how much brain waves are being produced and in what area of the brain. Your provider will create a brain map based on the qEEG to show what areas of the brain may be impacting emotions, attention, and other mental health symptoms. After this initial neurofeedback appointment, we will create a personalized neurofeedback training protocol that will target the areas of the brain that may be causing your symptoms.

3. Receive neurofeedback therapy

In a neurofeedback treatment session, we place sensors on your scalp to monitor brainwaves. You watch a video or play a game that reacts based on brainwaves; the screen responds with rewarding images or sounds when your brainwaves enter a positive state. This process helps “train” your brain without altering its chemistry, offering beneficial results without potential side effects, pain, or discomfort.

4. Improve between treatments

During neurofeedback therapy for conditions like ADHD, brain mapping helps us monitor, measure, and analyze brain activity to identify what activities may be at the root of your mental health symptoms. We can then create a plan that helps you recognize your brain states and reinforce positive brainwaves between treatment sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is neurofeedback therapy?

Neurofeedback is a type of therapy that provides real-time feedback about brain activity with the aim of teaching patients how to regulate and modify their own brain function to improve mental health symptoms.

How does neurofeedback work for treating ADHD?

Neurofeedback for ADHD works to suppress the activity of certain brainwaves while enhancing others, helping to reduce inattention and impulsivity. For example, in a typical neurofeedback session, a patient may receive rewarding feedback when sensors detect brainwaves associated with focus and attention. Meanwhile, brainwaves associated with inattention or hyperactivity will not provide rewards. This helps patients retrain the brain and learn to control brainwaves to help manage ADHD symptoms.

Does neurofeedback therapy really help with ADHD?

Research is still ongoing, but multiple studies have found that neurofeedback can help improve ADHD symptoms such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention in children.

What is neurofeedback therapy used for besides ADHD?

In addition to supplementing ADHD treatment, neurofeedback can help treat conditions such as depression, insomnia, ASD, anxiety, depression, learning disorders, and more.

Can I have neurofeedback done at home?

Neurofeedback therapy sessions are completed at ResWell, but patients can use the tools they learn in sessions to continue training their brainwaves between treatments.

Is neurofeedback safe?

Research on potential adverse effects is still ongoing, but neurofeedback is currently believed to be a safe and generally well-tolerated treatment for ADHD.

What does research say about neurofeedback?

Research has found neurofeedback to be an effective treatment for multiple mental health conditions, including ADHD.
