Frequently Asked Questions
What is grief?
Grief is a complex emotional response to loss that encompasses a wide range of feelings, from deep sadness to profound loneliness and even anger or guilt. The loss can stem from the death of a loved one, the end of a significant relationship, loss of employment, or any other life transition that disrupts your sense of normalcy and security.
Grief can manifest in various ways, affecting your physical health, emotional well-being, and overall ability to engage with daily life. It’s a deeply personal experience that varies greatly from person to person, not only in how it’s expressed but also in how long it lasts.
What are the symptoms of grief and stress?
The symptoms of grief and related stress are broad and can impact every aspect of a person’s life. Emotionally, individuals may experience intense sadness, tearfulness, emptiness, or hopelessness. Feelings of anxiety, irritability, or anger are also common, as are guilt and regret over things done or not done with the loved one.
Physically, grief and stress can lead to sleep disturbances, changes in appetite, fatigue, and somatic complaints such as headaches or stomachaches. Concentration and decision-making abilities may be impaired, making everyday tasks and decisions feel overwhelming. Social withdrawal is another common symptom, as individuals may feel disconnected from others and lose interest in activities they once enjoyed. The intensity of these symptoms can fluctuate over time, with periods of improvement interspersed with periods of increased distress, especially around anniversaries, holidays, or other significant dates.
What are the most effective grief and stress treatments in Los Angeles?
Most patients benefit from a combination of treatments personalized to their specific situation and needs, including psychotherapy, medication management, and integrative approaches. We believe integrative treatment that includes nutrition, sleep hygiene, mindfulness, and daily physical activity can help improve outcomes for patients with grief, stress, or other mental health concerns.
Do you offer telehealth appointments for patients with grief?
The first meeting is usually in person. We provide telehealth follow-up appointments to make treatment as easy and convenient as possible for you. Specific scheduling depends on the treatment plan developed with your provider.
Do you accept insurance for grief treatments?
While we do not accept insurance, we provide patients with the documentation necessary to file a claim with their insurance carriers.
