Help Kids Build Resilience this School Year

As parents, our goal isn’t to eliminate every obstacle our children face this school year. It’s to help them build the confidence and coping skills to navigate challenging moments. These five tips can help.

1. Ask, “What Will Help You Feel Ready?”

Instead of asking your children if they’re ready for the school year to begin, ask them what would help them feel more prepared. This reframe moves the focus from uncertainty and worry toward problem-solving and action. By helping them identify the support and strategies they need, you’re fostering confidence to navigate challenges.

2. Plan an After-School Recharge Routine.

Encourage a reset time after school before jumping into homework or activities. Every child is different; discuss what helps your family members to rest and recover. Some kids benefit from moving, like walking the dog or biking. Others may prefer listening to music or journaling. Resilience isn’t about avoiding stress; it’s learning how to recharge and respond to it in healthy ways.

3. Give Them Ownership.

Children feel more confident when they have a sense of control. Let them “own” parts of their school routine—such as packing their lunch, organizing their backpack, or setting up their homework space. Small choices build independence.

4. Teach Them to “Name It to Tame It.”

Back-to-school changes can bring big feelings. Help your children name what they’re experiencing—whether it’s excitement, worry, frustration, or uncertainty. Labeling emotions helps children understand, regulate, and cope with them more effectively.

5. Model Healthy Ways to Handle Stress.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, model healthy coping strategies like taking a walk, talking through the challenge, or asking for help. Children learn that everyone experiences stress and there are positive ways to manage it.
